Here is the quilt I made for her.
Her nursery has gray walls and her grandma made her crib bumpers with peachy pink, green, and white. The quilt is 54" x 63". I always make baby quilts large. I imagine the baby having tummy time on the quilt, on the floor, so I want it big enough for the baby to roll around on. It's also big enough for a toddler to snuggle under.
I just finished this queen-size quilt for my daughter. The center was an old quilt top she bought at Goodwill for $2.98. I hand-washed, re-cut and re-sewed the string stars.

When half was done, I had them photographed side-by-side so you can see the difference. The block were about 14", but after cutting them down, they are now 12".

The border was re-sewn from a small four patch quilt top. I won it at a silent auction.

Also in the auction offering was about 4 yards of nile green solid. I used the nile green solid to finish the borders and binding. The auction was many years ago at the Quilters Hall of Fame annual induction weekend. I was bidding against Eleanor Burns (yes, the Eleanor Burns). When she saw how much I wanted it, she very graciously quit upping the bid.
When you're sick from chemo and radiation, there isn't much you can enjoy. Always cold, maybe a pretty quilt in favorite colors brings a little comfort. This quilt was a product of a block exchange group to which I'm a member. Thanks to Terry, Ruth, Carol, Louise, Jan, Dorothy, Daisy, Bonnie, Phyllis, Eileen, Cindy and Debra for making blocks or being a member of this group. I put the blocks together and machine quilted it. Sending healing thoughts with every stitch. Why does cancer have to strike the best of us?

I finished it in time to give it to her when she was home for Christmas.

Click on the quilt to see it larger. It is huge, 93" x 102"! It took forever to quilt, but I am pleased with the results. I quilted it on my Bernina 1030. If you scroll down you can compare it to the EQ7 image.

Next up, I am scanning all my old family photos. This will be a big job, but it's fun.
It's time for the Inspired By Quilt Contest to support the Quilt Alliance. Quilters are asked to make small quilts inspired by quilts found in the Quilt Index or the Q.S.O.S. I didn't make a quilt for the contest, but two contestants were inspired by my quilts! Very flattering. To see the entries and the inspirations click here and here. While there take a look at the other entries and maybe place a bid or two!
Much to my delight, Deb Hathaway chose my quilt as her inspiration. You can see picture of her very cool quilt, Raw Clams at the Shore on her blog here: http://www.debhathaway.com/2014/06/02/raw-clams-at-the-shore/.
This one is for my bosses daughter, who just had her first baby, a girl, Desi. The gorgeous top was made by my work colleague, Julie Levy-Westin. Not only did she make the beautiful Roman Stripe, but she hand dyed all the fabric. So gorgeous. I machine quilted it. I love the way it turned out.
This quilt was made for my niece Sarah's baby girl Evelyn. Eveyln has two older brothers and made them quilts, too. Usually we avoid the big disasters like tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes. But every once in awhile we get hit with something. This time we got stopped in our tracks by an ice storm that is the biggest in over 25 years.

While it is beautiful, it is also dangerous.

We've lost some branches and the top of a tree.
.

But the worse for us, is the loss of power. We've been without power since December 22, so this makes day 5. I'm very grateful for the crews working around the clock to restore power for over 300,000 people, but it is getting old.

The bright side, we've been eating at lots of local restaurants and seeing movies. We've seen American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks and today's movie is The Wolf of Wall Street.

I am very lucky to have a smart husband who said, "We're going to a hotel." Hotel rooms are at a premium so we're sharing a room at the Holiday Inn Express with our daughter who's visiting from Chicago.

We've been checking on the house three times a day, because our dog Boomer is still there. The humane society recommended letting house pets like dogs and cats "shelter in place" rather than disrupting them by taking them to a kennel. Boomer's a bit lonely, but otherwise is fine. He's spending his days on the sofa in the basement. He's usually not allowed to be on the furniture, but it's easier for him to stay warm on a nice sofa. I also made a crockpot full of Italian beef last Friday and he's been having that with his dinner everyday since it will just go bad.

I hope everyone had a warm and happy Christmas.

Till next time......Happy Stitching

While at he AQS Show in Grand Rapids I was able to compare a few different brands. I bought this table from Tracey's Tables and I'm thrilled. It was delivered yesterday and they carried it to my basement and demo'd how it worked. My DH didn't have to lift a finger.
This table also has three drawers. Many of the tables I looked it at were much more expensive and had lots of extras I wasn't interested in. This table opens really large and rolls very easy. It has a hydraulic lift for stowing the machine. The $1200 price tag included delivery, set-up, and the acrylic insert for my Bernina. I've been sewing on it all day and so far, I love it.

A new sewing table and the Lions winning, I must be dreaming.
I converted a closet into an office in my sewing area in the basement.

This is the closet. It was full of stuff including the
parts of a quilt frame I never used. I gave it to a quilting friend who's putting it to good use. You can check out his blog here, Tim Latimer - Quilts, Etc.
This is the after, a new office. I needed a space for my computer and I am attempting to scan all the old family photos I can get my hands on, so needed space for my new, very cool scanner. I'm pleased with the result. I just need a new desk chair, something, firm, yet squishy. Something on wheels that spins, too.

To make room for the office, I needed to sort through two closets full of stuff and consolidate it into one closet. I took all my UFOs and put them in this cabinet. It's working pretty well and I estimate at least 30 UFOs in there.

I've spent most of my time doing hand applique on this quilt. I've blogged about it before. My daughter Colleen posed as the mermaid in 1993. I am vowing to finish this 20 year old project this year. Colleen is now 29 and wants this quilt for her new place when she moves to Portland, Oregon in May. The top is now complete and I'm going to start basting it as soon as this post is done. I will hand quilt it.

Yesterday I had a tooth extracted and replaced with an implant. It was surprisingly easy and pain free. My biggest issue is the flipper (fake tooth in a retainer like they wear in Toddlers and Tiaras LOL). It prevents me from chewing. I get a new temporary tooth on Wednesday so I'll be eating a lot of liquid food for a week. I have a nice blender and this afternoon I pureed chicken tortilla soup. Yum.

Till next time... Happy Quilting
My grandmother and my aunt had both made dresses for dolls for the Salvation Army. Before the dolls were given to little girls at Christmas they were put on glorious display in the Rotunda. I must have been about 4 or 5 years old, and the memory of all those dolls is still strong.

Many years ago, I found out the Salvation Army still had the program. My quilt guild (The Capitol City Quilt Guild) would receive about 100 dolls in September from the Salvation Army and would distribute them to guild members to dress and accessorize. When I heard about it, it brought back that wonderful memory and I knew I wanted to do one. Each September I would forget about the project and was wistful when the dolls were displayed at the guild each November, swearing I would dress a doll 'next year'. This year I was at the guild meeting in September and they had some extra dolls. Yay! I finally brought one home and here she is. I made her a dress and knit her a sweater. I also made her little quilt.
The pinwheel quilt was made from leftovers from the quilt below. I made this quilt for my nephew Charlie when he was born. It is a Snowball and Nine Patch. The snowballs were made using magic corners which left me with leftover half square triangle units that I made into pinwheels. I need only two more pinwheels to make the quilt for Dolly.
The shower was last weekend and I gave them this quilt.
It was a quilt top I made in a class many years ago. I pressed it and quilted it when I got the shower invitation. Jennifer's favorite color is purple, so I lucked out on that. I think of this as baby blocks in outer space. I'm happy to have a hand-made gift and to finish another UFO.

The next project is dressing a doll for the Salvation Army to give out this Christmas.
To celebrate I'm posting two new quilt patterns. For the uninitiated, Charm quilts are quilts that use one template, but every fabric is different. They were first popular in the 1880s. They were revived in the 1930s, and had a huge surge in the 1980s. Since then retailers have been packaging fabrics in bundles of 5" squares and designers have been finding new uses for the bundles. In the spirit of new uses for 5" squares, I've written two patterns.
Charm Baby uses the 5" squares to make 9 Patch units that are then cut up. Click here for the pattern.

Charming Hours

Charming Hours takes one light and one dark charm, layered right sides together, cut and sewn to make a 4" Hour Glass block. Click here for the pattern.

I still favor a traditional charm, where one template is used and every fabric is unique.
